The driver of a car travelling south on Highway 400 near Innisfil Beach Road on Sunday afternoon was found and charged with impaired driving by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
OPP received calls from six witnesses on Oct. 29 about a vehicle moving slowly, about 40 kilometres per hour, on the highway.
Police located the alleged driver soon after, asleep in his car.
The 39-year-old man, from North York, was found to be more than three times over the legal blood-alcohol limit.
The driver was given an automatic 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
“Call 911 or *OPP on your cellphone if you see any dangerous or criminal behaviour that needs intervention,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told BarrieToday.
“Police need to respond to that call immediately. That’s the only time there is an exemption for using a cellphone in your vehicle — when calling 911.”
Kerry called the situation “very concerning,” with the driver operating on highways or secondary roads.
“You don’t know what’s going on. He’s all over the road, possibly going through traffic lights, not being aware of pedestrians. All these things are tragedies waiting to unfold,” he said.
“We’ve seen that in the past where some car going down the road gets hit from behind by a driver totally unaware, unexpecting to see such a dangerous condition.”
