South Simcoe police are shown investigating an incident that occurred on Sept. 9 in the area of Aishford Road and Langford Boulevard in Bradford. On April 25, the department arrested a male suspect.

South Simcoe police say there’s been a “significant development” in the investigation into two alleged cases where firearms were discharged in public places within Bradford West Gwillimbury last summer.

The incidents, which took place on Aug. 4 at a school on West Park Avenue and on Sept. 9 near the Langford Boulevard and Aishford Road intersection, “shook the community,” Chief John Van Dyke said in a statement issued late Thursday night.

During the Langford incident, shell casings were found at the scene and witnesses told BradfordToday a driver pulled up to the intersection, made a U-turn and shot at another vehicle.

“Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident, but the callous nature of the shootings prompted an extensive investigation,” Van Dyke said.

Detectives were able to link the two occurrences together and identify a suspect. On April 25, a male was taken into custody and charged with firearms-related offences. He is currently being held pending a bail hearing.

"Our community's safety is paramount, and today's arrest sends a clear message that such reckless acts will not be tolerated in our community,” Van Dyke said. "We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, and today's arrest is a testament to the tireless efforts of our officers and detectives. I want to thank the community for their patience, support and cooperation throughout this investigation."
