Postcard Memories is a series of historic views, stories, and photos of Innisfil and the area, a trip down memory lane on a Saturday morning.

June has been the traditional month for weddings as far back as Roman times.

June was named after Juno, the goddess of marriage and childbirth, so celebrating your marriage then was considered to bring prosperity and fertility to the couple.

Today the (slight) majority of weddings – about 10.5 per cent – still take place this month.

This includes this Innisfil couple.

John Allan McFadden was working on a farm in Thornton when he met Irene Gertrude Kemp and their friendship included many long walks to her house on the 14th Line of Innisfil.

In 1939 after John enlisted in the Toronto Scottish Regiment which was part of the Royal Canadian Infantry, their courtship was carried out through long letters from overseas.

One of those letters contained a proposal and Irene readily accepted.

They were married June 23, 1945.

As the years passed, they welcomed three children, Dorothy, Ralph and Keith.

Allan enjoyed a long career working for the Riverdale Zoo which later became the Toronto Zoo.

One of his early duties was being in charge of the wildcats.

In later years they travelled a great deal and became very involved with their local church.
