Innisfil's Bruno’s Bakery and Café gets a makeover (7 photos)

Popular Innisfil bakery has become a staple for the community over the past 12 years and recently got a facelift to better accommodate customer needs and COVID-19 health and safety measures

“The wait is over!” says Bruno Alonzi, owner of Bruno’s Bakery and Café in Innisfil who recently opened his doors again after several weeks of interior renovations.

Alonzi has owned the café located on Innisfil Beach Road for nine years and carries a long history in the baking industry, stemming back to when he was a young boy.  Alonzi helped his late father (Aldo) who used to work as a shop foreman at an open-window baker’s factory and was the vice president of the Baker’s Union.

Alonzi opened his first bakery 12 years ago in Richmond Hill, Harvest Fresh Bakery, before opening another shop, Haymishe Bagel Bakery, shortly after. When he relocated with his family to Innisfil, it was only natural he would start a new bakery to cater to the growing community.

At the end of last month, Alonzi temporarily closed his bakery to implement cosmetic changes and update the interior of the café to accommodate Covid-19 regulations, while expanding their menu of gourmet foods.

“The pandemic changed some things,” states Alonzi. “So, we got ride of seating to change it more into a market bakery."

The café’s hot and cold tables were expanded to offer more food selections, as well installing new freezers which will showcase a variety of meat selections, seafood, and pre-made frozen meals such as lasagnas.

“We serve hand-sliced deli meats and cheeses, and still offer our popular Neapolitan-style pizzas, breads, cakes, pastries and cookies, and have added some groceries and merchandise,” notes Alonzi.

The café also reinvented its mixed salad bar and bakery section and now serves traditional Italian gelato alongside their specialty coffee bar.

“Our most popular selling item is the veal sandwich,” notes Alonzi. “I also love making ‘challah’ for the Jewish community. We put out fresh challah bread every Friday."

Alonzi says the bakery has been very busy with mostly take-out and pick-up orders while still accommodating walk-ins and catering. His wife Silvia helps Alonzi run the bakery, and together the couple has four adult sons.

“As Italians, you live in the kitchen and that’s where all the conversations happen… and they still do,” shares Alonzi. “I’m on the clock 24/7 but I take pride in what I do – cater to people – we love to put a smile on their face."

Bruno’s Bakery and Café is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
